About Us

McKibben Family

Who We Are

Sunshine & Sledgehammer Farm was started by Ryan and his wife, Amanda in 2015 as a way to supplement their growing family’s diet with nutritious, fresh, and pesticide-free food. Since then, the farm has grown to include chickens, honeybees, and a larger growing space. Ryan is a combat veteran with two deployments to Iraq. He was also the first graduate of the Veterans in Agriculture Program through the University of Florida and Veterans Florida. There he learned farm management as well as different practices for growing crops here in North Florida. Besides being the brains and the beauty of the operation, Amanda has put in many hours on the farm and is our Chief Operating Officer and child wrangler. Together we have four children and they are excellent farmhands, always willing to help and learn.

We are a proud local farm member of the Red Hills Small Farm Alliance, the Famer Veteran Coalition, the Florida Watermelon Association. And we have carried the Fresh From Florida® seal since 2021.

The Farmer Veteran Coalition and Work Vessels for Veterans have been instrumental in getting us started. It would be a disservice to these wonderful organizations not to mention them on our home page. A blog post thanking these groups will be coming down the pipe soon.

Local Farm Quality

When you live in the same community as your customers, it’s important to maintain a high level of trust. Although we are not a U-Pick style farm, we encourage our patrons to come out and see how we handle the food they buy. You are trusting it to be fresh, free of chemicals, and nutritious. We want to build brand loyalty and believe it is our duty to uphold that level of trust. It is important for us to be respected by our customers, fellow growers, and the business community. Since our model revolves around avoiding chemical intervention for weeds and pests, it is necessary for us to work selflessly. It is our honor to have you as our clients and friends and we strive to maintain integrity above all. Lastly, it is our personal courage that has brought us to where we are today and what will keep us growing in the future.
