Well, I can’t say much has happened on the farm this past month. We are still finding our forever farm and have been negotiating our lease. Because of the nature of our business, things move slowly when we decide to make changes. Mrs. Sunshine and I work full-time jobs and we have kids, church events, etc., etc., etc… What I can say is that I am really toying with the idea of getting a bunch of broccoli and other fall crops in the ground as it is still plenty warm for them to set their roots before the chilly nights it needs to sprout that deliciousness we all love.
I am also talking to a company about planting a fall/winter cover crop that is an incredible super crop. It is an oilseed crop similar to flax that is crushed and the oil that comes from it can be used to add to jet fuel and biodiesel. The byproduct is a nutrient-dense cattle feed that is high in protein. This wonder crop is called carinata and is in the brassica family. I’m sure I will write more about it later, but it is something I have been working with for several years in various capacities from planting, harvesting, and cultivating to developing policy on the state level to advance the use of carinata in Florida.
