Wow! What a summer. With all of my family’s health issues, summer camp, work trips, etc., it’s a wonder that we harvested anything at all. We did get a small crop of watermelons and our beans just did not do well. For one, the grass around the electric fence grew SO FAST, so the deer got in early and stunted the growth of the bushes. But even after I mowed, the grass grew up just in time for the beans to sprout and the deer just tore them up. Next year, I think I will plant them on hills, but that idea may not even be worth a hill of beans…
The watermelon crop was small, but mighty. We got a late start on planting as we discussed in a previous blog and honestly, I was not impressed with the plants that we purchased from a grower in Tifton Georgia. I should state here, though, that we LOVE this grower and will continue to purchase from them as long as we need plant starts.
Our tomatoes did well, but so much grass grew inside the greenhouse that it made it hard to manage for a part-time farmer like me. I’m hoping to get an earlier start on that next year as well and get on top of the weeds and bugs before it becomes a problem. It was our first year in a greenhouse so we learned a lot of lessons, but we still did get lots of tomatoes. I was proud of our tomatoes but we did get some negative feedback from our first sale. We don’t eat tomatoes in our house very often so leave a comment below and let us know what you would like to see in a tomato. Is it size or color? Ripeness?
Besides that, we are done harvesting for the summer and will start getting the soil ready for our winter crops. Is there a crop you’d like us to grow this winter? Let us know in the comments!
