🌻 Closing Out Sunflower Season, Turning Toward Broccoli 🌱

There’s a certain quiet that comes at the end of sunflower season. The bright yellow blooms that once stretched toward the sky have bowed their heads, and the fields that were full of life just weeks ago are still and calm. It always feels like the season ends too soon — one day you’re surrounded by color and the next, you’re left with memories, a few lingering petals, and the promise of something new to come.

This year brought its share of lessons. Sunflowers gave us their usual burst of joy, but watermelon season didn’t go as planned. Between the heat, rain, and timing, it just wasn’t our year for melons. Farming has a way of keeping you humble like that — some things thrive, others don’t, and all you can do is take notes and try again. We’ll be planting much sooner next year, giving the vines a better head start before the summer sun turns relentless.

Now, as we clear the fields and return nutrients to the soil, our attention shifts to the cooler days ahead and the next crop in line: broccoli. There’s something peaceful about this transition — trading the bold, golden faces of sunflowers for the sturdy green rows of fall vegetables. Broccoli likes the chill, so we’re getting the beds ready, loosening the soil, and preparing for those first little transplants to settle in.

Baby broccoli

This time of year always reminds me why I love the rhythm of farming. Each season has its highs and lows, but there’s comfort in the cycle — in knowing that every ending makes room for another beginning. The sunflowers may be gone, and the watermelon may not have had its year, but the ground is ready again, and so are we. 🌻➡️🥦🍉
